As the market demand for Ambassador vehicles declined, so did Hindmotor's factory.

Simultaneously, darkness descended on the lives of factory workers, employees, and officials. This factory employed approximately two and a half thousand people in 2013. 2,000 workers volunteered the following year. That year, the factory closed. Hindustan Motors, or HM, will be sold by 2018. PSA Group purchased it. This time, they plan to launch new electric four-wheelers and scooters under the HM brand. And all of those scooters and cars will be manufactured at the Hindmotor factory.

Initially, the work will be carried out on the old Hindustan Motors factory infrastructure, which covers approximately 300 acres of land. The initial investment is estimated to be around Rs 400 crore. The factory now employs 300 people who have been there since the days of former Hindustan Motors and are paid on a regular basis. This factory will hire 600 additional workers. A large portion of them will be involved in technical work. The production of electric scooters will begin this year.

MILESTONES of Hindustan Motors Limited:

Year 1942 -  Hindustan Motors Limited was founded in Port Okha, Gujarat, as a small passenger car assembly plant.

Year 1948 - Hindustan Motors Limited relocated its operations to Uttarpara, West Bengal, and established manufacturing facilities for cars and trucks.

Hindustan Motors Ambassador Reimagined as an Electric Vehicle by DC Design:

DC Design, now known as DC2, has reimagined the iconic Hindustan Ambassador as an electric concept that will be manufactured soon.

DC2 is one of India's premier automotive design houses, known for some breathtaking designs. The company has repeatedly showcased some very exciting concepts, while customised vanity vans and cars remain popular with the elite in India and abroad. Now, DC2 has revealed an entirely new concept that resurrects the iconic Ambassador in a completely new avatar. Not only has the design changed, but the Amby is now entirely electric. The electric Ambassador project fills you with nostalgia, and we spoke with Dilip Chhabria to learn more about the hot-rod concept, which we hope to see on the roads soon.

DC has released images of the electric Ambassador, and the new model resembles the icon while remaining modern. The rendering of the electric Amby is based on the Hindustan Ambassador. There are several standout elements, such as the massive chrome grille upfront with the angular LED projector headlamps, and the squared wheel arches give the model a nice look. Take note of the curved front fenders, which mimic the original design, as well as the nose-bulge on the bonnet, which brings a familiar look from the original.

The wheel arches are flared at the back, and the roofline curves into the boot for a strong appearance. This Ambassador isn't attempting to be sleek in any way, but the compact proportions do appear to be something that will be appreciated in the city. The squared taillights are all LED at the back, and the strong shoulder-line extends from the front door across the boot-lid. The render also uses chrome to frame the grille, which looks classy. Not to mention the ostentatious multi-spoke chrome wheels.

The Electric Amby is tall, which Dilip Chhabria says allowed the team to put the battery pack in the floor, resulting in a lower centre of gravity without sacrificing space. The concept version shown here is a two-door, but the production model will be a four-door, just like the original.

Mr Chhabria also informs us that the company will use carbon composite materials in the construction of the electric Amby in order to reduce overall weight without compromising the product's structural integrity. Performance figures are being kept under wraps for the time being, but we've been promised 0-100 kmph in about 4 seconds. For what was once the face of India's elite and powerful, that's nearly supercar territory.

The new e-Amby is also reminiscent of DC's hot-rod Amby concept, which was developed over a decade ago. It was the showpiece at the 2008 Auto Expo and, according to Mr Chhabria, it continues to bring in inquiries for the company.

The Hindustan Ambassador then lives in the hearts of India and its diaspora all over the world. And these will be key customers for the brand, which is looking to bring the icon back home, albeit in a more futuristic form. The electric Amby will be ready for trials in the coming weeks, and it is now the lockdown that has slowed progress. Mr Chhabria goes on to say that a Swiss company is working on the electric motors, one for each wheel, and the transmission.
